Under Ontario’s digital DriveON program, our technicians perform the required vehicle safety inspection and, when the vehicle passes, issue a Safety Standards Certificate through the DriveON system.

A safety inspection at The Mufflerman costs $189.95 (plus applicable taxes) for most cars and light trucks. The inspection covers the required DriveON safety inspection and your Safety Standards Certificate when the vehicle passes. If repairs are required before a certificate can be issued, we’ll explain what was identified and provide a quote before completing additional work.
An Ontario Safety Standards Certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. If you’re selling a vehicle or transferring ownership, plan the inspection so the required registration or ownership paperwork can be completed within that period. If the certificate expires, another inspection may be required.
If your vehicle does not meet one or more of Ontario’s required safety standards, we’ll explain what was identified and provide a quote for the repairs required to pass. Because The Mufflerman is a full-service auto repair shop, many required repairs can be completed at the same location, including brake repairs, tire repairs and services, suspension repairs and exhaust repairs.
Once the required repairs are completed, the vehicle can be rechecked so the safety inspection process can be completed.
Ontario has moved vehicle inspections from the former Motor Vehicle Inspection Station program to DriveON, the province’s digital vehicle inspection program. The former MVIS program ended on March 31, 2025, and vehicle inspection information is now processed through DriveON.
For drivers who need a Safety Standards Certificate, this means the inspection process now uses Ontario’s DriveON system rather than the former paper-based MVIS process. The Mufflerman’s participating locations are licensed DriveON Vehicle Inspection Centres.
Driving for Uber or Lyft in Ontario? Ride-share drivers may need a current Safety Standards Certificate to meet platform and local vehicle inspection requirements. A safety standards certificate confirms that your vehicle has met the minimum safety standards on the date the certificate was issued. It doesn’t guarantee the condition of the vehicle, rather it confirms that it’s safe to drive. You cannot put plates on a vehicle without a safety standards certificate.
To get a Safety Standards Certificate, your vehicle must pass the required inspection at an authorized DriveON Vehicle Inspection Centre. The inspection is recorded through Ontario’s DriveON system, and a Safety Standards Certificate can be issued when the vehicle meets the required safety standards.

There is a 10-day reinspection period following a failed safety inspection. If the vehicle is returned within that 10-day period, the recheck is completed at no charge. After 10 days, a new safety inspection must be performed.

A Safety Standards Certificate is required in Ontario in situations including transferring ownership of a used vehicle, registering a rebuilt vehicle, changing a vehicle’s status from unfit to fit, and registering certain vehicles brought into Ontario.
